There's a moment right before a storm breaks — the air goes still, the light changes, and then that smell arrives. Earthy. Clean. Unmistakable. Most of us have felt it a thousand times without ever knowing it had a name.
It does. It's called petrichor.
What does "petrichor" actually mean?
Petrichor is the scientific term for the distinctive earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The word was coined in 1964 by Australian scientists Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas, who combined the Greek words petra (stone) and ichor (the fluid said to run through the veins of the gods in Greek mythology).
Fittingly, the word for one of the world's most universally loved smells was born right here in Australia.
Why does rain smell like that?
The scent isn't the rain itself — it's everything the rain releases. A few things are happening at once:
- Plant oils. During dry periods, plants release oils that settle into soil and rock. When rain hits, those oils are kicked back up into the air.
- Geosmin. This is the real star of the show — an organic compound produced by soil-dwelling bacteria (Streptomyces). Geosmin is so potent that the human nose can detect it at concentrations as low as 5 parts per trillion, which is part of why the smell of rain feels so vivid and immediate. It's the same compound responsible for that "earthy" note in beetroot.
- Ozone. Lightning splits oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the air, some of which recombine into ozone and drift down ahead of the storm — that sharp, clean note you catch just before the rain arrives.
Put plant oils, geosmin, and ozone together, and you get petrichor: nature's own signature scent, and one humans are unusually sensitive to.
Why we're drawn to it
There's a theory that our sensitivity to geosmin is evolutionary — for early humans, the smell of rain on dry earth signaled water, and water meant survival. Whether or not that's the full explanation, petrichor has a well-documented way of triggering calm, nostalgia, and a sense of grounding. It's one of the few scents that seems to slow people down rather than stimulate them.
For our founder, that scent carries a very specific memory: monsoon season in Sri Lanka, watching the rain fall from her grandmother's verandah. That's the memory Petrichor Candles was built around.
Bottling a feeling
You can't capture ozone in a candle — but you can capture the warmth, the earthiness, and the calm that petrichor represents. That's exactly what we set out to do with Rainstorm, our signature scent: notes of ozone, lemon, and bergamot up top, settling into the grounding, earthy base that gives petrichor its character.
It's not a literal recreation of a rainstorm. It's the feeling of one — the stillness right before, and the relief right after.
